Ebola like virus is killing fish in the great lakes

A deadly Ebola-like virus is killing fish of all types in the Great Lakes, a development some scientists fear could trigger disaster for the USA's freshwater fish.

Because of a lack of genetic resistance to viral hemorrhagic septicemia, fish populations could be damaged in the same way the smallpox virus struck Native Americans and Dutch elm disease decimated elm trees, says Jim Winton, chief of fish health at the U.S. Geological Survey in Seattle.

Mosquito carrying new disease from india

information from: http://www.heraldtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070429/NEWS/704290624

University of Florida researchers say the threat of chikungunya should give local homeowners another reason to keep mosquitoes in check. The disease has sickened 1.6 million people in the Indian Ocean region since 2005, so researchers fear travelers could bring the disease here and mosquitoes could spread it.

Chikungunya (pronounced "chicken-GUN-ya") is generally not fatal, but causes painful joint inflammation resulting in stooped posture.

While other symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting and a rash usually subside within five days, the joint pain can last years.
